Monobrow

Hey people!

Taking some time off of SNESology and I am pleased to present a Donkey Kong Country 3 song I made.  It’s a ReMix of the song “Cavern Caprice”, which is one of my favorite tunes from the game.

A lot of people seem to not be as huge fans of DKC3 as the other two… But I find DKC3 to be highly underrated.  The music is very ambient… The gameplay is EXCELLENT, and it’s got so many goodies and secrets.  Give it a chance!

Anyway, this song is called “Exploration C and it’s about 6 minutes of music based on the very short Cavern Caprice theme.  I spent quite a lot of time on this song, and the great people over at OCReMix direct posted it for the Double the Trouble Project.  I went for ambient, but with a kind of calming mania… The pace varies throughout so you don’t get too bored.  :)

Also the flutes were provided by my friend Will Roget II (bustatunez).  I hope you like!  <3

fwugradiation:

Woah I was just on a collaborative album using the samples from Yoshi’s Island. Check it out!! ! ! ! *yoshi noises*

I’m on this too!  Some great songs all around!

I made this too!  Be sure to download the art!

snesology:

It’s time for some Yoshi’s Island~!

There’s a cool new album on Ubiktune, presented by cool guy sleepytimejesse:

Make Music, Throw Music

Make Music, Throw Music - A Yoshi’s Island Tribute

This album is all about SMW2, featuring SNESology artists such as Toby “Radiation” Fox. and Monobrow who wrote the above song.  She says:

Basically I always enjoyed watching Yoshi get high as a kite when he ate a Fuzzy.  This song is dedicated to that “warm and fuzzy feeling” ;).  I wanted the song to feel like you’re floating up in the clouds, and it’s a little precarious at times, but overall you’re doin’ just fine.

Get this album and while you’re at it, you should probably check out every album available on Ubiktune, just sayin’.

Also Monobrow has been kind enough to incorporate some original artwork with her YouTube video as seen above.

snesology:

Well, it looks like they pretty much got all the info down!  Read the article, see which songs they chose to showcase, including works from some1namedjeff, Alex Roe, and of course, Shnabubula!  (How nice of them!)

Also, underwater song posting is IMMINENT!

This is pretty awesome!  They are very concise w/ their info!

snesology:

We’re back for an underwater adventure!

Monobrow returns with another track for SNESology.  It’s even in the same key as her last one!  How thoughtful :)

Here’s her story:

This track was originally an audio track I made for a game that asked for an underwater level. The game never panned out, so I decided to convert it to an SNES underwater level track for SNESology, because hey why not?

SNES games used:

Super Metroid (ambience and bubbles)
Earthbound (second lead flute)
Contra 3 (various synths)
Terranigma (organic instruments)
Final Fantasy VI (the rest)

Mixing instruments from various libraries is a great luxury, exciting really.  Let’s see what some of our artists come up with next?

I made this!

snesology:

Yo!

It’s Saturday! And that means the second part of our “older music” series.

This piece is by Monobrow, and uses the esteemed Final Fantasy VI soundset, and is entirely LOOPABLE (oldskool SNES style).

She writes:

This song is basically #1 of my 20 town songs, as in, I aim to make 20 of these babies… This song is also from 2007, so it’s also REALLY OLD, but I revamped it up a tiny bit for SNESology (added the last section).  It’s supposed to evoke this feeling of wanting to be taken away from well, a sad place, possibly a destroyed village or something like that.  I use Terra here because out of all Final Fantasy VI characters, I think this would fit her the most.  Enjoy!

Yep!  I made this guys!  It’s pretty old but I still like it <3

snesology:

Monobrow meets Secret of Mana!

Well, that and a unique blend from Final Fantasy VI and Terranigma sounds.  Not bad for her first SNESology submission.

She tells us:

This song was originally supposed to be a really quick excersise before I started a real SNESology song, but it turned into much more.  It’s became very emotive and changing.  I named it “Secret Inside Me” because I think it’s the kind of song that would express feelings bottled up inside, that you don’t reveal.  Also it has that “Fear of Heavens” ending motif :J

Pretty!  Also the Mana Tree in her video is quite lovely!

Yup!  I made this song!  Yay for making music that sounds like it’s from a game in 1994!  (which was basically the best year btw)

And now, random Ultima Online Clusterfuck!

OMG CLUSTERFUCK

So anyway,

This is an older attempt for me to pretty much cover my favorite Ultima theme Character Create.  I named it Vas Rel Por (If you played, you know what this means).

I love this theme, moreso even than “Stones”. When I first played Ultima games, I didn’t have the luxury of a computer, so I played the (quite awful) SNES versions. It wasn’t until around 1999 that I got my first computer and played Ultima Online (for a good few months), and later, I played through Ultima 6 and 7… I also remember playing briefly, Ultima Underworld at a friend’s house in like 1995.

It makes me sad to think about what happened w/ the Ultima franchise, Garriott, Origin, and EA (what exactly did happen) and today, I see EA sporting the “Origin” name for their Steam copycat. That can’t be a coincidence.

This intro is one of my favorites from any video game ever. It shows real forethought and care. Ultima will basically be this once great thing, forever lost in time… So RIP <3

For this cover, I went for a cinematic feel, but w/ a hint of that gypsy feel from the original games. Please excuse some of the rushed/oversaturated reverbiness and the weird violin lead that I have no idea how to utilize correctly.

P.S. I LIKE AVATAR WOMEN WITH DAGGERS FOR EARRINGS OK???

So I finished a Metroid II remix <3.  It’s called SR388 - The Way Forward

DOWNLOAD HERE

About a month ago, I discovered there is a Metroid 2 remake in progress. I got super excited so I decided it’s about time for a decent Tunnel theme remix. This is similar in style to my Mother 3 remix, a bit more coverish and straight forward, not elaborate. I feel that the Tunnel theme is strangely upbeat for such a dark game, so I decided to keep that bright feel w/ the sine lead. I also went for a bit of a gritty organ early on, because that’s how I always interpreted the initial lead in my head when I played this on the Game Boy growing up.

Metroid II is wildly under-appreciated, especially this song, so I hope my take can do it some justice.

The gameplay is me playing the first few minutes of the remake demo, which is really awesome and I hope they finish! Please forgive my playing, as I was using a keyboard. This is also just a remix, I am in no way affiliated w/ the project except I think it rocks!

Enjoy!

snesology:

This is it… my final contribution to SNESology for the forseeable future. Due to health concerns I need to give this a rest.  I poured a lot into this, I used 3 different soundsets in conjunction, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI, and Terranigma.

I’ve got plenty of stuff coming from other contributors that will be truly stellar, so look forward to that!

We got this from here Sam!  Don’t worry!

A cool friend of mine (Pixelated) has started a marathon of playing NES games for 100 hours straight with a few friends.  They will be playing many games, and are even taking requests!  All proceeds from this event are going to charity to help with Multiple Sclerosis.

Here’s his Press Release:

The NES for MS Marathon Drive goes live Friday, June 1st at 11am EST

Gamers Unite! Unite to run a NESathon of classic video games for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. The goal is raise money to fight multiple sclerosis while attempting to play NES games non-stop for 100 hours, from Friday, June 1st to Tuesday, June 5th at 3pm. Can it happen? You can find out by watching the entire event as it’s broadcast live at nesathon.blogspot.ca.

Participants will be playing some games they’re good at, some games they’re bad at, and some undeniable classics. Highlights will include the Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda and Mega Man series. Kirby’s Adventure, Duck Tales, Power Blade, Kid Icarus, Bubble Bobble, Little Samson, Battle Kid, Ninja Gaiden, Punch Out and many more! Requests will also be taken from the live chat room.

100% of donations received will go to the MS Society. Funds raised from the event will help enable continued funding of support services for people touched by MS. This includes support groups as well as equipment and funding programs which help improve the quality of life for those living with MS.

Canadians have one of the highest rates of multiple sclerosis in the world, with an estimated 55,000 – 75,000 currently living with the disease and 1,000 new cases every year. And while there has been great progress in research and treatments in recent months, there is presently no cure.

Noble cause, man.

Starbound Cover by Katie Kinkel (Monobrow)

OMG!

Shnabubula’s 7th album! My amazingly talented friend Shnabubula is releasing his newest album, Starbound. This time, its a forty-two minute-long synth odyssey spread across five movements, and you can grab it, for FREE, on Ubiktune or Shnabubula.bandcamp.com.  If you haven’t checked Shnabubula out before, you’re missing out!  Also I made the album art!  Please give this guy your money.  The album is FREE but you can donate whatever you think it deserves (millions of dollars right)?

Also if you haven’t already, please check out his Summer project @ SNESology.tumblr.com

P.S. When you get to track 5, try not to burst flaming into the depths of the universe!

Like I said, Shnabubula rocks!  And he’s right :)

snesology:

After many hours of hard work, I managed to completely rip and build an approximation of the Final Fantasy 6 (3 US) sound engine. It’s still somewhat beta as it’s not yet in a completely user friendly state, I also haven’t finished the percussion yet, however it is fully functional. Much thanks to Katie Kinkel a.k.a. Monobrow for help with identifying the instruments. She will be contributing some FF6 tracks of her own in the near future. So to test the waters, I put together this little pastoral tune.

More to come soon!

Shnabubula fuckin’ rocks, even w/ SMW soundfonts!  Expecting more SF releases including FF6… I recommend you guys subscribe.  He plans to release more.

snesology:

WELCOME to SNESology. Here I will be posting songs written with the simulated engines of various Super Nintendo Classics. Currently the best option available for doing so is to use Dave Harris’ SNES Soundfonts, available here: http://vgmusic.com/~lunar/soundfonts/

For this project though, I’ve been building Kontakt instruments from the ground up, designed for greatest customization and ease of use in order to replicate the various sorts of echo as well as simulated legato and filter sweeps involved in several SNES soundtracks. nki releases will be forthcoming.

To Start us off I had some fun with the Super Mario World soundset… an 8 and a half minute long psuedo-medley, a self contained adventure story.

The Full song is available for free-download here: http://shnabubula.bandcamp.com/track/snesology-adventures-in-dinosaur-land

So my song, Cosmic Surgeon?  People told me to enter a contest that came up right around the time I finished it.  It was for the Homestuck Fan Album, which actually turned out to be 2 albums lol.  So yup, I entered, and I was one of the winners, in fact it’s actually the first track (track 1 is an opener)… I’m kinda astonished by that today, but I guess it fits!

About the song, I called it Cosmic Surgeon because of John and that big drill thing he did… And the whole cancer thing… So I guess the song did kinda cater as a theme for him already.  What a coincidence that as soon as I make a remix, I can enter it into a contest right away and it actually wins.  When I wrote it, I just really wanted to capture how the entire comic made me feel at the time, especially after watching Cascade.  It’s a theme for John, but I also think of it as kind of a real “Homestuck” theme for the entire thing, I guess, as a lot of people kinda obsess over Doctor…

Anyway, I remastered this version of the song, and added a few other elements, and instrument balance, per a couple suggestions by Radiation Fox… So you can think of this as more of a Cosmic Surgen v. 0.1…

Also check out the really atmospheric art for my track by Koba, congrats:
